Pediatric Eye Exams in Phoenix, AZ

Gentle, thorough eye exams for children of all ages — starting at just 6 months. Protecting your child's vision and supporting their development.

Why Are Children's Eye Exams So Important?

Children depend on their vision to learn, grow, and explore the world around them. Vision problems that go undetected can significantly impact your child's ability to succeed in school, participate in sports, and develop essential motor skills. Yet, many parents don't realize that the vision screenings done by pediatricians and schools are not a substitute for a comprehensive pediatric eye exam.

At Arizona's Vision, our experienced optometrists have specialized training and advanced tools to perform thorough examinations of your child's eyes — detecting conditions that standard screenings commonly miss. We make our exams gentle, friendly, and fun to put even the shyest child at ease.

Did You Know? Approximately 1 in 4 children have an undetected vision problem that affects their learning. The AOA recommends that children have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age!

When Should Your Child Get Their First Eye Exam?

The AOA and AZOA recommend the following eye exam schedule for children:

  • 6–12 months: First comprehensive eye exam — checks for early refractive errors, eye alignment issues, and eye health. Infants use their eyes to develop motor skills and learn about the world.
  • Age 3: Pre-school age exam — crucial before they begin formal learning. By this age, children can participate more actively in the examination.
  • Age 5–6: Before starting school — vision is critical for reading, writing, and classroom learning.
  • Every 1–2 years: Annual or biennial exams through school years to monitor changes and ensure optimal vision for learning.

Warning Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem

Watch for these signs that may indicate your child needs an eye exam:

  • Sitting too close to the TV or holding books very close to their face
  • Squinting or closing one eye to see better
  • Frequent eye rubbing or excessive blinking
  • Complaints of headaches, especially after reading or schoolwork
  • Avoiding reading, coloring, or other close-up activities
  • Delayed motor skill development in infants and toddlers
  • Poor eye tracking or difficulty following moving objects
  • One eye appears to turn inward or outward (strabismus)
  • Failure of a school or pediatrician vision screening

Common Children's Eye Conditions We Treat

  • Amblyopia (lazy eye): One eye doesn't develop properly, leading to reduced vision in that eye. Most treatable when caught early in childhood.
  • Strabismus (crossed eyes): Misalignment of the eyes. Treated with glasses, patching, vision therapy, or surgery.
  • Myopia (nearsightedness): Increasingly common in children. We offer Invisalens myopia control to slow progression.
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness): Children can appear to see well but struggle with reading and near tasks.
  • Astigmatism: Irregular corneal shape causing blurry or distorted vision at all distances.
  • Convergence insufficiency: Eyes struggle to work together for near tasks, causing reading difficulties.
  • Color blindness: Affects about 8% of boys. Early identification helps children adapt and succeed in school.
  • Eye health problems: Conjunctivitis, blocked tear ducts, and other conditions that require prompt treatment.
